Allen Tupper True’s 1937 mural in Tremont lobby.

True’s granddaughter and biographer, Victoria Tupper Kirby, thinks that an intentional portrayal is highly unlikely. According to Kirby, True never depicted actual individuals in his murals. Nevertheless, the woman stepping off the plane does bear a striking resemblance to Babe, a media superstar at the time the painting was done. And what about the man in the tan trench coat to the far right in the same picture? Standing apart from the others and checking out the aircraft with special interest, he looks an awful lot like another celebrity of the era, millionaire Howard Hughes.
